Hi there! I’m Carmen Gashnikov, Director of Host Partnerships here at Europe Express—and a frequent flier across the pond. Over the last 15 years, I’ve explored Europe for both work and personal adventures, and along the way, I’ve learned a thing or two about what makes travel smooth and what makes it… less so.
One of the biggest lessons? Smart packing makes all the difference. Whether I’m off for a quick conference or a two-week multi-city itinerary, my goal is always the same: pack light, stay organized, and keep it simple so I can focus on the experience—not my suitcase.
Packing can feel overwhelming. I’ve been that person standing over an open suitcase with way too many clothes and no idea how to make them fit. But with some trial and error, I’ve built a system that keeps me sane. The secret? A checklist-driven, minimalist mindset.
Before any trip, I make a packing list based on my itinerary. Clothes, toiletries, chargers, adapters, travel docs—if it’s not on the list, it doesn’t make the cut. I also get honest with myself: Am I really going to wear that second pair of heels or third pair of jeans? Probably not. And when your trip includes navigating cobblestone streets, crowded train stations, and tiny hotel elevators, a carry-on and personal bag are more than enough.
One game-changer I swear by is my clothing rack system. A few days before any trip, I start pulling outfit options and hanging them in a corner of my home office. It’s like creating a mini boutique where I can mix, match, and visualize everything together. This helps me edit my wardrobe down to the essentials—and maybe even discover that I already own everything I need (or that I deserve a new top!).
By departure day, I’ve narrowed things down to a capsule wardrobe:
Everything is versatile, layer-friendly, and suited for both day and night.
When it comes to shoes, comfort wins every time. I bring:
For flights, I always layer bulkier items like a blazer or cardigan into my outfit. And here’s my personal rule: never wear shorts or skirts on a plane. Airplane seats aren’t the cleanest, and planes get chilly fast.
I never travel without compression packing cubes—they’re great for saving space and organizing outfits by day or destination. On winter trips, I swap in vacuum-seal bags for coats and sweaters. I also maximize every inch of space: socks go in shoes, jewelry in pouches, and every nook gets used.
Here’s my personal packing shortlist—items I always bring, no matter where or how long I’m traveling:
Things will go off-script—that’s part of the adventure. But staying flexible and prepared goes a long way.
Even for 10-day (or longer) trips, I stick to a carry-on by planning to do laundry. My go-to formula:
I stick with neutrals and add pops of color through accessories like scarves, belts, or earrings to transform daywear into evening looks.
At the end of the day, packing smart means traveling with more ease. I want to spend my time exploring a new destination, not dragging a giant suitcase through busy streets or repacking every morning. These strategies have helped me make the most of every journey—and I hope they do the same for you.
If you’re planning your next European adventure, remember preparation, patience, and a little creativity can make packing one of the easiest parts of your trip.
