Private Tour: Bavarian Mountains & Salt Mine Half Day Tour
Leaving Salzburg behind, travelers journey into the Bavarian Alps, passing the dramatic face of Untersberg Mountain before crossing the German border. The route continues through a scenic valley along Königssee’s mountain stream toward the Obersalzberg, a region once tied to the Third Reich. While little remains from that era, the Eagle’s Nest can often be seen perched high above the ridge as the road climbs toward the foothills.
The experience shifts underground with a guided visit to a 500-year-old salt mine. After changing into traditional miner’s clothing, participants board a small train that travels deep into the mountain. Inside, a local expert explains the mine’s history, centuries-old engineering methods, and the importance of salt production to the region. Illuminated caverns reveal expansive chambers carved by hand. Two wooden slides lead farther into the tunnels, where the tour concludes with a serene raft crossing on a subterranean salt lake, an atmospheric finale to this unique alpine adventure.
